Happy Cinco de Mayo! While many of us were sneaking margarita’s with tacos at lunch, the folks over at Facebook were working away and rolling out a new feature for brand pages, video covers.


While checking in on a company page that I manage, (and an excellent custom shirt manufacturer I might add) I noticed a message on our cover photo. See the screenshot from our page below.

Now, this is still a very new feature as it is not accessible across all brand pages at this time. (I checked a few other pages I manage and the option wasn’t there just yet.) Knowing the way Facebook works and thinking of past feature rollouts, there’s a good chance this is still very much being tested. But, with the emphasis Facebook has been putting on video, this new feature isn’t surprising.

As a digital strategist I think it’s an excellent feature addition for marketing purposes. The cover photo is the first thing people see when they visit a brand page so, this new video feature will assist brands in conveying their story right from the start. Plus, with the announcement that Facebook will be autoplaying sound in videos a well designed cover video should grab a visitors attention.

For example, take the cover photo above. As a static image it does a good job of showing visitors that J.J. Threads offers a wide variety of shirt options. But does it really tell someone that the shirts can be fully customized? Imagine the same image as a video with a stop motion effect and each shirt changing showing the full customization ability with an end message using their tagline, “Designed by You, Made by Us.” That, to me would be pretty impactful and would definitely help show their unique product offering.
